Growing a beard can be a tricky business. Some guys admittedly have a really easy time with it, while other struggle with myriad issues that are common to beard growth. Itching, flakiness, uneven growth, slow growth…these are all discouraging problems that can cause a guy to just give up on his beard dreams.
I’m here to tell you, though, that they are not insurmountable. Plenty of men have gone through these trials and tribulations and came out the other side with the most epic of beards. I’ve compiled some beard growing tips from guys like that who were kind enough to offer you their wisdom so that you too might achieve your #beardgoals.
These tips are not listed in any particular order, so don’t take the order of appearance as an indication of one tip being more important than the next. That being said, let’s dive in!
Know your limits
One of the first bits of wisdom I received from our bearded breathren was simply to know what you can do yourself and what you can’t.
Shawn’s completely correct, here. Barbers exist for a reason. Salons exist for a reason. They have the training and knowledge required to make your beard look how you want it to look, so why not use their expertise to your advantage?
I’ve actually had the same problem as Shawn. It’s really easy to over-trim, and harder than it seems like it should be to get a symmetrical shape when trimming your beard on your own. Some things are just best left to the pros.

Wash, Rinse, Repeat
This seems like a common sense piece of advice, but it’s honestly not. Guys, you have to wash your beard and practice good hygiene and grooming habits. Please don’t make the mistake of thinking that growing a beard takes less work than shaving. Take it from The Beard Mentor:
I had much the same problem as Ian when I first started growing out my beard. It was itchy, and it was severely flaky. So, I did a little research of my own and landed at the same solution as he did: using a beard wash and oils.

Growing your hair out inevitably leads to awkward stages where the hair doesn’t seem to want to cooperate. You try your best to style it, but it just never looks right.
The same thing happens with your beard…which is probably why the most popular bit of advice I received from guys was to just let it grow.

The important thing to take away from this advice is that there’s likely to be a point during your journey in which things just don’t look right. Don’t let that distract you. Just keep trudging forward and sooner or later, you’ll get what you’re after.
Which, when you think about it, is actually pretty solid advice for life in general.
It’s not as easy to grow a beard as it may seem. You can’t just let it go and hope for the best. It takes some maintenance. Proper grooming and hygiene are especially important.
Patience is also important. If your goal is to grow a long, healthy beard, then it’s doubly important. Put the scissors and trimmers away, and let your facial mane grow!
Then, when it’s starting to get to the length you desire, start thinking about how you want to style it. If you don’t think you can handle trimming it on your own, seek professional help. Barbers these days are ridiculously good at beard trims and styling.
Follow these beard growing tips, and you’ll have the beard of your dreams in no time.
